Most of the yarns that you’ll find on the shelves at Kawartha Yarns are imported from countries in Europe. We have all sorts of blends from Germany, Italy, Britain, Switzerland, Holland, etc. When selecting our stock, we focus on quality first and value second. We have everything from serviceable cottons to cashmere blends, as well as exotic yarns like bamboo, soya, linen, etc. From time to time we try to obtain yarns from local farms. We have “Natural Focus” from Westminster Yarns, a wonderfully soft DK weight pima cotton that has been dyed with tree bark instead of harsh chemicals. Garments knit from this yarn do not lose their shape and sag. We also carry “Cloud Cotton”, an aran weight organic cotton in colours suited to summer light. This summer we have expanded our pima cotton line to include "South Pacific" from Estelle Yarns, a very soft cotton that wears like a charm. Looking for something a little bit more exotic? How about "Bamboo Cotton" from King Cole Yarns, an equal blend of bamboo and cotton is colours bright enough to compete with the summer sun. For cool evenings there is "Mirage", also from King Cole Yarns. It is a dk weight wool/acrylic blend in variegated colours that have to be seen to be appreciated. Another very popular yarn is "Marble Chunky" which comes in 200 g. balls. It comes in colours sure to please the most discerning knitters. They're sure to please men too! "Superfine Alpaca" is a new addition to our stock. It is a chunky-weight, cuddly-soft pure alpaca wool in sumptuous colours. This year, why not knit something fabulous for yourself in this yarn! Kawartha Yarns loves knitting for babies! Our most popular baby yarn is “Snuggly” by Sirdar, and we carry it in 4-ply as well as double-knitting weights, in everything from pastels to the newest trends in colour. Baby weight yarns include cottons, wools, acrylic, wool-silk blends, alpaca-cashmere blends and cotton-linen blends. For the knitter in a hurry, there is also a very soft, chunky-weight, wool-acrylic-cotton blend to whip up a fast smock-coat and hat. Sock yarns – we got all sorts of sock yarn! Solid colours, marled, self-patterning sock yarns, in every colour imaginable. You can choose from wool-nylon, cotton-wool, wool-elastic, cotton-wool-elastic, and our very favourite, hand-painted wool-alpaca sock yarn. Another new addition is "Cadenza", a sweet little merino-silk blend that makes a lovely shawl with only three skeins. For felted creations, we carry a wide range of colours of “Cascade 220” and “Galway” pure wools. They felt up beautifully in the washing machine and produce hard-wearing pieces that won’t disappoint. We have an excellent selection of books on felting instructions and patterns, as well as “Noni” patterns for bags. For classic knitting, we have Sirdar’s “Country Style DK”, a soft yet sturdy combination of acrylic-nylon-wool that’s perfect for children’s or men’s sweaters. If you don't like the colours we have on the shelves, we'll try our best to match the shade you want. For afghan lovers we have the always-dependable Tempo in worsted and chunky weights for knitting and crochet. If there are any yarns that you'd like to see us carry, please do drop us a line and let us know. We'll do our best to accommodate your requests.

I had so much fun learning how to do cro-hooking. You are a great teacher with a WHOLE lot of patience. It was the last week of May that I was in Lindsay with my husband. Afterward we went to Rochester NY to be with my Mother's cousin for several days. Then I got very busy, and it was two weeks later that I finally had the chance to practice my cro-hooking.
I had a little problem getting going. I casted onto the cro-hook with a knitting needle, (the two needle method) but that took a little while to get the hang of it, and it did not turn out very well on the samples which I made. (that was one night). The next night I got a large crochet hook and croched the chain directly onto the cro-hook, and dropped the chain onto the cro-hook, (this worked out very well, once I got the hang of it). Like with anyting new, it takes a while to get the hang of it. So, I have about six samples, using different colors and different techniques.
I started the afgan with the varigated pink and varigated beige combination. After doing about 6 or 8 rows of the pattern, I decided that I do not like that color combination. You and my husband also did not like that combination, but I thought it would work out. And it did not. So, I went on a search for soft yarn. I had a difficult time finding it. I finally found a really pretty lilac color yarn to go with the varigated pink. I now have 40 rows of the pattern done. I only work on it at night, so it is taking me longer to do than I thought it would. The lilac yarn is not as heavy as the pink varigated, so I am using double yarn, which makes it slower to do. The varigated beige looks nice with a chocolate brown, to make a very nice masculine afgan. The yarn shops I went to, did not hear of cro-hooking, so I explained what it is. I could not find cro-hooks at all.
What did you say the cro-hook is made of? I took the yarn to get a color that would match nicely. I came to a conclusion that the second color needs to be a solid color. I have finally got the pattern down pat, so that it is easy for me to do. By crocheting onto the cro-hook, I got a nice starting edge to work with. Is that O.K. to do it that way? Or, should I have started it differently?
You are a very nice lady, and so gracious with your kindness and friendliness. You are also a very good teacher. I was bound and determined to do it myself. I must admit, though, that if I could not have figured it out the second night, you would have gotten a call from me, saying, "HELP" "PLEASE"
But, it worked out. I will send you pictures, as promissed, so you can see the results, and also pictures I took of you in the store. The next time we are in Lindsay, I will deffinitely look you up and enjoy the pleasure of your company and your smile.
You are a very kind lady, and I wish you all the best for your store and business.
